Since Trump’s re-election, a majority of the USA has been returning to its Christian roots. It’s interesting because for the past two decades, Yoga, was exploding in popularity which in some ways contradicts Christianity - or does it?
Yoga encompasses three main Eastern religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. With the first two featuring specific traditional structures, and the third being more free.
Taoism. It is better known as both religion and philosophy rooted in Chinese culture with its strongest attribute connecting to nature.
As a Yin Yoga Teacher, it’s been my privilege to dive deeper into the history of Taoism since its very essence is mentioned in the title: Yin Yoga, as in the Yin and Yang. In fact, I recently learned that Yin Yoga was originally called Taoist Yoga, so how can I deny its relevance? With that being said, I’m loving my journey down the rabbit hole as I learn more about this beautiful branch of Yoga.
For starters, the religious title, Taoism, is often referred to as The Tao which means The Way. Automatically, I think of the famous saying from Jesus Christ declaring, “I am the truth, the light, and the way.” Those words, The Way, remind me of the Tao as well as Jesus Christ. Both of them referring to a special passage way or a path that one should take. In Taoism, it means to be in harmony with nature. In Christianity, it means to follow Christ. In Yoga, they bring all of this together by describing the benefits of having Christ Consciousness.
